LECTURE NOTES

27/08/2018 ( Week 1 )

Our first typography class involved a little bit of group work as each group need to present one topic based on the list of topic that Mr Vinod gave to us in the brief based on the 8 different layout design systems.

Design typography systems :

- Bilateral system
- Transitional system
- Axial system
- Random system
- Dilatational system
- Modular system
- Radial system
- Grid system

After all the 8 topics has been presented , we have to compile all the slides together and that will be our week 1 lecture notes.

03/09/2018 ( Week 2 )

No lecture, but we have to refine our exercises 1 after getting all the comment.

10/09/2018 ( Week 3 )

Public Holiday. Although its a holiday we have to put our work up to our blog to get some comment from our lecturer.

17/09/2018 ( Week 4 )

Public Holiday. As usual for holiday we Mr Vinod has assign us with exercise and after we are done we will have to send it to Mr Vinod for feedback.

03/09/2018 ( Week 2 )
After getting all the comments and some specific feedback, I needed to redo 2 of my composition because they didn't turn out to be so specific as the system , and one of it I bolted the wrong information because  we have to identify the hierarchy of information.

Exercise 2 "Type and Play" ( Week 3 - Week 4 )

10/09/2018 ( Week 3 )
Although today is a public holiday we still have to do our exercises and we have to send our work to Mr Vinod to let him see and comment about it. Basically we need to get curative and use photograph as a guide to Create a typographical composition.

( Part 1 )
We have to use a photograph that could either be about man made structures, buildings or nature. For me I choose a picture I took with my phone when I was in my brothers condo at Kl Sentral, and we was to draw lines out from the object in the picture till we could find letters within the structure.

3.9 Mine photograph with colour

 4.1 Mine photograph greyscale

After the photograph is done we have to start drawing lines on the object in the photograph.

4.2 Progress of part 1

After all the lines is done, we have to carry on with the letter construction process.

4.3 letter K

4.4 letter Y

4.5 letter A

4.6 letter D

4.7 letter G

4.8 letter N

4.9 letter I

I did 7 letters but we have to only need 5 so chosen the letter K,N,G,I,Y

5.1 letter K,N,G,I,Y

After we found all the letters , we have to refine the form of the font from its crude shape extracted from the image chosen, to a more refined form that has some element of its origin embedded within.

5.2 Refined K

5.3 Refined N

5.4 Refined G

5.5 Refined I

5.6 Refined Y

Final K, N, I, Y, G

Exercise 2 "Type and Play" ( Part 2 )

For part 2 of exercise 2, we have to make  a selection of an image of a photograph that we like that could either be about man-made objects, structures or nature, which will also then be combined with 20-30 words. We must use only the 10 families of font that Mr Vinod gave use last time and one colour or duo tone is allowed for this part of the exercise and the size should be A4.

5.7 Original image

5.8 After editing the ice cream

I want to do a ice cream melting kind of art work where I need to embed the ice cream and my words to give the cone a semi invisible ice cream with words on the ice cream cone.

5.9 Screenshot of process

I didn't know how to design the main title for this poster thats why I came out with the content 1st before I do the title since its a ice cream so my title will be ICE CREAM and we need to have 20-30 words for the whole art work so I was not sure what should I put, out of no where I got the idea of doing a ice cream shop poster so I though of adding in a few signature flavour and may be a short quote for this art work so after I figure out I start to put in text.

6.1 Screenshot of process

after a few attempts of the font changing and placement I finally got a satisfied layout for the top part of the poster. and I was not sure where my quote should be and after a few attempts with some research on ice cream poster I decided to put it at the bottom of the poster.

6.2 Screenshot of 1st attempt art work

after this I just remembered that we only can use one colour of duo tone fo this exercise so I have to put it in photoshop to change its colour to duo tone.

6.3 Screenshot of 1st attempt art work in photoshop

6.4  1st attempt final artwork

After getting my feedback from Mr vinod, I have to redo because my 1st attempt is not very accurate according to the brief.

6.5 Image for the background

The 1st thing I saw this image is the thing feel I got was this is a very sad or a very depressed image, so I decided to take a totally different approach for this project where I do something sad and depressed.

6.6 Process of final art work

After putting in the words I still feel that is not expressing 100% of the message that I want to convey, after looking at it for awhile I tried adding in a string tie around the body.

6.7 Process

6.8 Final art work

FEEDBACK

03/09/2018 ( Week 2 )
Specific Feedback : For my bilateral system one of the art work have to rearrange the layout little and for the other system which is random where I bold the wrong information and I have to know the hierarchy of information given to us after but all others are ok.

General Feedback : Mr vinod gave an advice saying that when it comes to designing typographical system exercises, we should consider 3 things while doing our work, First, is Abides by the system, Second, is looks good/well designed "good use of the white space, must leave some room for imagination". Third, we must also consider readability and how we use the art work to communicate.

10/09/2018 ( Week 3 )
Specific Feedback : Decent work. You have managed to refine it to a certain degree. You still need a few more iterations and you should have a better version. When you begin the refining process please set your font on a baseline and scrutinize the x-height, ascender, descender and consistency in stroke and style etc.

17/09/2018 ( Week 4 )
Specific Feedback : You’re not tasked to create and Advertisement. This is an exercise and akin to an typographical art piece. Focus on the ice cream and the typo within. Create lettering to fill the volume if need be. Take cue from the samples in the brief. Your colour scheme isn’t following instructions. I said use one colour image (monotone) and then use text on it. Follow the instructions as given to you in class.

REFLECTION

Experience

27/08/2018 ( Week 1 )
My experience in the first Advanced typography class was definitely different compared to the last semester because mr vinod explained about our exercises and projects that we have to complete in this semester and I felt it was more challenging compared to the previous semester, we did learn about the 8 typographic system and I agree that we actually learn more when we have to present the topic compared by mr vinod one person preparing all the  slides and giving us lecture.

03/09/2018 ( Week 2 )
My experience in the second week of our advance typography class is and its kind a different because compared to the semester one where we will have one to one assessment with our two lecturer but now for the second semester, we did a open assessment with our classmate  where we can give comment and its been commented in open, I feel its much more effective where we get more comments from many different perspective.

10/09/2018 ( Week 3 )

Public Holiday, we have to work from home, for the first part of exercise I have to trace over the lines of an image and dissect potential letterforms from it which was something new to me and its also interesting.

17/09/2018 ( Week 4 )

Public Holiday, in the second part of the exercise, I got to create a composition by combining text of 20-30 words together with a picture.

Observation

27/08/2018 ( Week 1 )
I observed that it was a little confusing because the 8 typographic system some of the topic has almost similar content, so after I did some research on the topic that I was not so clear on after doing the research I the picture was much more clearer for me.

03/09/2018 ( Week 2 )
I observed that we must have to read the paragraph of words given carefully so that we are able to identify the correct hierarchy in the content given by the lecturers

10/09/2018 ( Week 3 )

Public Holiday, the observation I found out is that its kind off interesting it was that letter could be extracted out and created just from a single image with lines traced over it.

17/09/2018 ( Week 4 )

Public Holiday, while creating the composition, I observed that the placement of the text is important as it is what helps express it.

Findings

27/08/2018 ( Week 1 )
I observed that the typographical system was something we did with the last semester, but it was just a brief explanation on it but for this semester we have to go through in detail.

03/09/2018 ( Week 2 )
I observed that we are not just designing the art work but we have to observe 3 main things 1st is Abides by the system, 2nd design looks good and we have to managed out the good use of the white space, 3rd we must also consider the readability and how we use art work to communicate

10/09/2018 ( Week 3 )

Public Holiday, I found out that is not easy to traced out the letterform and yet we have to somewhat reflects back to its origin in the letterform.

17/09/2018 ( Week 4 )

Public Holiday, for the part 2 I found out that I was a little lost as I have no idea what kind of image I need to find and text I need to put in to merge the text with image.

FURTHER READING

Week 2 ( 03/09/2018 )

To understand more onto how the typographical system works, this book helped me to view how designers have to accept that there are a variety of principles when it goes around organising words or images whiten a desired structure and that typographic organisation are complexed in a way:

- communication
- hierarchy
- order of reading informations
- legibility
- having a contrast

We are given the eight typographic system, this book also gave me a further understanding in relation to how each system has its rules though implementation a sort of purpose that leads to a unique composition result.

The book also provide me information of how we can use types of non-objective element just so it adds balances and contrast. with work examples given, it really did help me to work out how I can compose typography, that abides the eight system and how i could place them a in a certain dartboard measurement having it legible as well.

Week 3 ( 10/09/2018 )

From the chapter “Mixing serifs and sans serif”, I learned and understood that using a sans serif for headlines while using a serif for the body text is one of the oldest forms of tricks in the book. However, there are also other traits about serifs and sans serif that might come in handy.

For example, it may be easier for the eyes to differentiate a serif typeface from another when it is used in a combination, rather than having one serif typeface in a group of san serif faces. Also, sans serif faces can be handled tighter and have lesser inter-character spacing than serif faces, which makes it a suitable choice for space-saving and also to grab the attention of viewers through headlines.

Another thing worth noting is that if the required setting for a design includes a lot of numbers that’s set with a small point size, sans serif numerals are known to be more legible.
