LECTURE NOTES

24/09/2018 ( Week 5 )

For this week lecture was done by 3 groups

After the groups are done with the lecturer as we were one of the group that was not chosen to present this week so after the lecture we have to compile the 3 lecture slides together to make it as our notes for week 5

The 1st group is giving a lecture on " History on Typeface from Pictograms to Charlemagne "

For the 2nd group is giving a lecture on " History of typography from Gutenberg to Present Day "

For 3rd group is giving a lecture on " Inspiration for Typeface "

01/10/2018 ( Week 6 )

For this week there will be two group giving a Lecture and one of the group is my group which consists of Ron ( Me ), Brian, Chee Kent, Jessy, Sam which will be talking about what is the process of " Thinking Before Design " where the other group will continue on our topic which is " Anatomy of Type "

My groups slides which we will be lecturing about " Thinking Before Design "

Next group will continue the lecture which is a continuous of my groups topic " Anatomy of Type "

After the two groups is done with the lecture, As usual almost half way through the semester Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul called us to gather in the middle of the class and get feedbacks for the exercises and project that which pass and what that we are working on , the 1st thing I gave back some feedback which is the brief and explanation was not so clear compared for typography class during semester 1 , Mr Vinod answered that since we are the 1st batch going thought this module so there was very very little reference for us to look on and moreover this module is Advance Typography so we have to really work and do more  research on ourself. Nadia came out of and idea where some exercise or project that we are recommended to use our on photo, so she said that why dont we have a class or two just on photography session teachings how or us what kind of way to get a good or up to tanrdt image there more questions but is not so relevant to the module.

INSTRUCTION

24/09/2018 ( Week 5 )

For this week's class we were given our 1st project for this module. Which is " Typosexual Typographic Exhibition " is the title of the exhibition that we are required to work on for this project 1. For this project is something similar with our previous exercise part 2 where we have to use the title that we were given and combine it with a visual element. this combination of image and text will then be a signature artwork or u also can call it a " Key Artwork "

The 1st step that was advice by Mr Vinod is by creating a composition, and we are only allowed to use black and white so that we can focus on the form and not be distracted by the colour that we use, then after the composition is done a maximum of two colours can be used in our design layer on but or special case if there is a need to use the 3rd colour we have to consult our two lecturer and only after getting approved by the two lecturer than we only can use 3 colours.

The 1st thing came in mine is to create a poster but with that idea I am still in a stage of confusion because the instructions was not very clear and specific because our lecturer want us to explore more and moreover we are the 1st batch for this new module so there was not much example given as example but I still try to create something since there is tutorial for the next class so after that class I can get some feedback and hopefully I will have a clearer perspective on this project.

1.1 Background image

1.2 Process of background image in photoshop

1.3 Final background image

After getting the back ground image done in photoshop, now i have to move it over to illustrator to put in the content that we want to put in.

1.4 Process in illustrator

1.5 Process in illustrator

1.6 Final 1st attempt

after the 1st attempt I felt that its was not what I want and till this stage I was still not clear on the project so I tried to move and relocate few of the words.

1.7 Process of 2nd attempt

1.8 Final 2nd attempt

01/10/2018 ( Week 6 )

After getting feedback and clarification on my 1st and 2nd attempt for project 1, I kind of understand what we have to produce for this project where I came out of and idea with a person jumping and the title looks like its also jumping.

1.9 Original image

2.0 Edited image

2.1 Screenshot process

After putting in the image I have to decide the position of text that I am going to put it in.

2.2 Screenshot process

After putting in words I have to mask out some part to make it visual like the words is behind the girl jumping.

2.3 Final of 1st attempt

2.4 Final jpeg of 1st attempt

After confirming the position and after masking the text I decided to put in some colour for the text, because its changeling for me to work with black and white work because I love colours, so I decide to put in some colour to the text, I was choosing colour but need to choose a colour that relate back to the title " Typosexual " so I decided to choose maroon.

2.5 Process of 2nd attempt

Putting in the solid colour to the text does not look nice, I was wondering what can be done to the title and the colour, I was trying out different colour which it did not convey the meaning of title. so I decide to stay with maroon than I tried to put in some gradient to the text.

2.6 Process of 2nd attempt

2.7 Final of jpeg of 2nd attempt

After adding in gradient to my text, I was still not so satisfied with my work where it feels like the background is not mixing in well with the girl and text, after considering what should I do to the background and I found out that there is the girl's reflection on the floor so I decide to put the reflection of the text

2.8 Process of 3rd attempt

By copying the text and reducing it with the opacity to create the reflection

2.9 3rd attempt for project 1

08/10/2018 ( Week 7 )

after showing my 3rd attempt to mr vinod he said that there is no relevant value to the background and the key art work which is the girl jumping and words. so the feedback was removing the background than my key art work will work as it self and I have to make the text interplay more with the image.

3.0 Process of final attempt for project 1

3.1 Final attempt jpeg

After the work is done I showed the lecturer they said ok and I have to proceed to project 2.

FEEDBACK

24/09/2018 ( Week 5 )
Specific Feedback:
Both of my exercise part 1 was ok but for part two there is still space for improvement and the concept that I am trying to convey which is depression can be seen and the image was a little too dark.

General Feedback:
For Part 1 have to be dissected. The letterforms have to be refined and only needed some little characteristics to it. Group presentations is about collaboration not cooperation. Help your group mates when they are stuck, also ask questions to the audience to see if they understand what we presented. After the audience answered, don't confirm the answers immediately and ask for the others to answer and view their thoughts first.

01/10/2018 ( Week 6 )
Specific Feedback:
The way I crop the image looks interesting but the kid is not related to the exhibition because this exhibition is for designer not kids so the advise from Mr Vinod is to choose another image and the concept of the kid shouting out the title and other content is good but for a key art work we cant place the object right at the corner and the a key work should stand by it self but not borrowing the content to make it stand. For presentation, I had a very good control on the tone for my lecture and a great work on controlling the class and getting their attention and pay attention on the lecture that I was giving.

General feedback:
Based on our first project, it is advisable for us to focus more on two things only, which is the form and the text which needs to be somehow combined with a maximum of 2 colours, creating a signature artwork which shouldn’t involve some sort of border between the two. Our artwork should not have borders, and the image and type should integrate and intertwine with each other well. The elements used should also be related to the title. Instead, our artwork should be able to stand on its own. We should not forget that whatever we’re designing should represent an exhibition which revolves around type, designers and intimacy. We were advised to seek research not only from the Taylor’s library, but it would be better if we could invest in our own books or even look for e-books. For presentations, it is good to have references to books or articles, its good to have tone in the lecture for example content which is important explain in a higher tone and its also good to get control of the class where we observe who is not paying attention we stop our lecture and ask them question.

08/10/2018 ( Week 7 )
Specific Feedback:Mr Vinod asked me to remove the background as this art work should stand by it self as a key art work where we can take the key artwork to apply it anywhere we want. after background is remove and my work was approved by both of the lecturer as I can proceed to project 2.

General feedback:
For project 1 our final artwork we should do it in Illustrator so it can be scaled. For the second project, we should start by sketching before doing in digitally. The way the poster is created should also be in a way that fits well with the artwork, and typographic systems can be applied.

REFLECTION

Experience

24/09/2018 ( Week 5 )
For this project 1 owe are required to Create a key art work which is somehow similar with exercise part 2 but its more intense because we have to make it a key art work and to make sure that the art work stands by it self.

01/10/2018 ( Week 6 )
For my group had a lecture to conduct and it turn to be excellent said by Mr Vinod, besides that like the previous semester half way through the semester we have a gather together to get our feedback on this semester and give some advice to make the module better or its all good enough. After getting feedback on our project 1 and I still not very sure on what is the clear perspective on this project.

08/10/2018 ( Week 7 )
I have to remove the background to make my art work stand by it self and we have to proceed with project 2 I tired to put in the background but mr vinod told me that the. background has no relevant value to the key art work.

Observation

24/09/2018 ( Week 5 )
For this project 1 is much more easier compared to exercise part 2 because we have to deal with only 3 words which is the title only.

01/10/2018 ( Week 6 )

Its much more easy to control the artwork because it have lesser content but at the same  time its also not easy because we have to deal with white space surrounding the art work to give it a appropriate portion of white space.

08/10/2018 ( Week 7 )
As for my observation for a key art work to be successful we cannot borrow any background element or any other thing else to make the key art work stand out.

Findings

24/09/2018 ( Week 5 )

I found out that its not easy to make the text and image to have a connection. that is why I have some trouble of thinking about how I want to combine my image and text together in some way that fits and looks good at the same time.

01/10/2018 ( Week 6 )

I found out that is not just that u put words and images up to the art board than it will look nice and look connected, we have to go through a lot of mistakes to get what is expected.

08/10/2018 ( Week 7 )
I found out that the the key art work must not have any element surrounding it because it should only have one main focus and texts woven in the main focus, to make it work as a logo or key art work.

FURTHER READING

Week 5 ( 24/09/2018 )

This book includes the fundamentals of typography. The works illustrated in this book are also supported with informative descriptions that's easy for readers to understand.

From the book, I understood that:

- The writer talks about how type is everywhere and we can pretty much find it everywhere such pages of books, walls, floors and street signs. The writer also proceeded by saying that each typeface showcases a distinct personality.

- The term 'x-height' is used to describe the distance between the baseline and the mean line. The reason why the letter 'x' is used as a gauge is because of its shape where it is flat at both the top and bottom.

- Typeface and type families can be categorised according to their characteristics. Typeface classifications are usually divided into the four basic categories which are block, roman, gothic and script. It is important to know the differences between the variations type to understand which one best suits a particular design.

- Using a single typeface is possible to complete a design. However, more than one typefaces are commonly used in a design as it creates hierarchy which comes in handy to navigate around a publication.

- Text hierarchy is essentially a visual guide for readers, allowing the headings and body text to be well organised. Hierarchy is important as it helps indicate the level of importances through the size or type styles. However it shouldn't be too complicated to the point that the text becomes hard to read and reduces visual harmony.

Week 6 ( 01/10/2018 )

This book illustrates how each type has its own style to it. Typeface doesn’t just play a part in a design by lending an attribute to the identity of something. It also showcases the taste and personality. The type collection series focuses on just one specific typeface at a time and illustrates how it has been used from around the world.

From this book, I got to understand more about Futura and how it’s being used. As of today, Futura continues to be a type that’s used universally and is pretty much available everywhere. Futura is a classic, that has a look that’s simple, with a geometric style that can fit well for different purposes.
