Instructions
Week 1 Theme : Contrast
On the first week, Contrast was our main topic and we was instructed to create an a4 composition in any media of our liking that shows the design principles " contrast ".
Contrast is the difference in luminance or colour that makes an object ( or its representation in an image or display ) distinguishable. In visual perception of the real world, contrast is determined by the difference in the colour and brightness of the object and other objects within the same field of view.
1.1 The Rainbow Heart
From the lecture , Ms Sherry explained that contrast is normally used to emphasise a subject in all kinds of composition. Through that lesson , this is my final piece of artwork
Feedback
I had a strong contrast on the colour that I used and a good composition of the white heart with the rainbow the top left, simple but very eye catching.
Week 2 Theme : Gestalt
Gestalt was the topic of the second week, Gestalt is a psychology term which means
' unified whole '. It refers to theories of visual perception.

Feedback
Critic session : the art work has a lot of distractions in different ways through the colour I have used "gold" , I have to tell them its a giraffe and explain about the composition then only they know its a giraffe figure.
Week 3 Theme : Symmetry & Asymmetry
Symmetry was the topic I choose for week 3 , Symmetry is a part on the opposite side of a shape or an object as two equal part are being divided by guidelines creating an effect of reflection.

Critic session : Nice colour used , looks like a Art Deco piece of work. the cleavage line enhanced the art piece. by the look Prof sherry said she understands what am I trying to talk when she look at the lock in the middle.
Week 4 Theme : Pattern and Repetition
Pattern and Repetition was connected with each other n it works well for both of the element
so I tried to work with both of the element. Defined as the same or similar elements throughout my design regardless of regular or irregular, even or uneven. Where repetition works with pattern where it creates unity.

Critic session : The two lecturer 1st commented on My 4.1 baba nyonya tiles pattern art work and they said it was very beautiful done n the colour combinations does gives the baba nyonya feel , after I went home I decided to do another piece of art work which is the 4.2 cube poster they say is looks very architectural kind of poster by the grid of the boxes n the lines.
Week 5 Theme : Direction
Direction can be created by lines , to give a direction to the eyes from where u want to focus on. we have to decide on the main direction that we want to show or express , we have to frame it with the lighter and less important objects.

Critic session : During the critic session one of my friend commented that is really does give a direction from the top as if like its a view from the parachute. It does give a very architectural fell by looking at this art work

Week 6 Theme : Line
Lines are used to separate objects, every lines have the difference in weigh and thickness we can also play around with the thickness and weigh to a different depth in the same piece of art with the simplest thing which is lines. Through placing the lines in different direction and position it will gives or show rhythm in the art work.

We had a different way of critic , instead of committing on every single work, we were given instruction to write $25 on 4 piece of paper and this will act as our cash. We has to walk around the class to have a look at all the art work created and choose 4 that we would 'buy' with our paper money. From this little activity, my work earned a total of $150.

Week 8 Theme : Rhythm
Rhythm is a design principles that unifies and shows consistency in everything like shapes and colours. It can imbues a sense of order into the design. It can also allow the viewer to relax and better comprehend the rest of your design in the same pice of art work.
8.1 Rhythm in shapes and colours

The colour that I used, it gives a very strong feeling of the America flag colour, the falling building does gives a strong movement as if the building is all falling apart.
Week 9 Theme : Shapes and Form
I have chosen Geometric shapes, for geometric shape mainly have angles in the shapes, we have to be regular and precise in our design, we have to often use rulers and compass to create the lines and shapes finally we have to give a feeling of control and we have to make it in order to visually feel geometric.

Project 1 - Self Portrait

We was assign to create a portrait of our self in any kind of media , so 1st thing came to my mind was a cover magazine of myself and recently we had a family photo session in a studio so I took this picture n I wanted to turn it to a "magazine cover" , so yeah there is where I start to think and plan my layout of the poster.

After I am satisfied with the editing of my picture I start putting in words and information to make it as if a real magazine cover look.

Ms jinchi and Ms sherry said that the picture is perfect but for the words or the style of the words I used in the 1st attempt was a little boring so ms jinchi and ms sherry gave me a lot of advice on the font that is much more suitable. after all the type face is corrected ms jinchi gave some advice on the alignment for all the font , examples like the DESIGNER'S must be align with the PROFILE word and the quote right at the bottom of my cover. After everything is done figure 1.5 is my final portrait design as a magazine front cover.

Feed back
Ms Sherry said in my perspective of my creating a magazine cover, I really did convey what I wanted to do and its visually nice , ms sherry said that if she looks in a typography kind of view she has a few comment on the poster I did. Some of my friends said it does really look like a magazine cover.

Project 2- outdoor composition
Week 9 - Week 11

For our design principles project two, we had to choose a place to go and investigate. After we investigate we have to come up with a composition based on our location which represents a feeling that we have towards the space.
1.1 Chosen location for project 2 "ss2 petaling jaya"
1.2 The environment of the family mart in ss2 "all picture was taken at 2am"
A surface explanation what is family mart, if you dont know family mart is a Japanese convenience store franchise chain. family mart is japan's section largest convenience store chain, behind 7-Eleven , there are now 24,242 stores worldwide.
For my chosen location is where I normally get my supper at 2am while I am rushing with my assignment and I ended up going to one of my favourite supper place which is " FAMILY MART " located in SS2 petaling jaya. we have to choose the right location that means to us,Although this is a shop where we can't really gather the image of this place during the day and night atmosphere. I tried going in the day , its totally the same the only difference is during the day u see working people with your shirt , suit and tie and students wearing thiner uniform , but during the night how do I identify is there working people or students or teenager there because found people doing their office work there and students doing their home work there and some teenagers chilling in family mart.

1st of all I felt that some where is not right with this poster , is like there is lack of information in this poster and it does not convey the feeling of family mart, by looking at it is just like placing a few image and work is done. Than after looking at this poster for 2 days where I dont know what to do , so I went the family mart and sit there to feel the environment, although I say I get my supper there often but I just go in get my food and I leave so I didn't really know how it feels to be in there. I decided to go to family mart with my laptop, after 30 mins idea starting to come at that moment I start to add image of the products you see in the store and the feel I get is " busy " , " messy " , " congested " and to conclude the 3 feeling with one word is " uncomfortable ".

After I am done with the art work I am still confused with the two piece figure 1 .4 and figure 1.6 which should I choose. So I decided to ask for advice , 1st my family member's the only thing they said is " so messy " not my style of designing a piece of art work they dont like both of the art work, next I ask my close friends and girl friend they said its so messy and ugly they prefer the 1st attempt looks nicer. this is not stopping , I went to uni and ask my uni friends they all say it looks messy but it does give the feel of family mart and it looks like Japanese advertisement, my final stop was consulting ms sherry , I showed the 1st attemptto ms sherry she likes the composition and the playing opacity of image , than I show her my final attempt and she was like this is so much better and by the look of it, it does convey the feeling or mood of family mart, so by her confirmation I settle down with my final piece figure 1.6.
Feedback
Ron did manage to convey the family mart feel or the environment of the place , the use of different food image , different angle of different image and composition is good by putting various type of image like food Japanese words and product image and some human figure and from the side logo pointing up and by bringing the eye thought out the paper from the middle logo. I did convey the message or feel of the store.

Final project - Environment Analysis

For our design principles final project, Ms sherry told us to get out from the house , classroom and most important to get out from google to explore the outdoor as we are going to need to look at some of the billboard by the side of the road as a references in order to create a composition, we also need to observe the principles of design that we have learn to apply it on our final composition of this semester. For me I choose to Create a poster by collecting the principles that is used or the element of the billboard or even the structure of the billboard to recreate a art work of my own.
1.1 Examples of billboard
The principles I got from the billboard's is movement , repetition , emphasis , direction , gradient , figure ground and contrast. By getting all the information I started to think what kind of poster I want to do and put in what kind or principles or element that I got from the billboard , after analysing I got and idea to Create a Japanese poster because I like the approach and the style that Japanese poster has. From there I do my research and identifying the principles that is used in general and find some pictures for reference.
1.2 Reference
Bright colours
One thing you will definitely notice when delving into design of the Japanese is mostly with colour and life. The most common colour combinations for Japanese design is red , gold and black but when searching through any archives you'll see its full spectrum of palettes.
Gradients
Another treat you might observe in Japanese graphic design is a large use of gradients. Subtle colour fading and bleeding into one another is a very commonly used graphic element , often used for background to bring life and colour to designs.
Circle
Circles are another recurring element in Japanese graphic design. Inherent symbols of balance and harmony , circles are widely used motifs in Japanese design. A common motif used throughout Japanese culture is a Mon. Mon is "typically contained within a circle, tend to have axial or rotational symmetry, and rely more on abstract geometric shapes than realistic reproduction of real- world items."
Collage and Layering
In a similar vein to the previous point, there is a large demonstrated propensity in Japanese visual design to layer elements, producing a collage like effect.
After identifying the important Japanese elements to include in my poster than I came out with a sketch and some discussion for my principles.
1.3 Identifying principles
After identifying the important elements , I have and idea to do two similar sketches , is either the Japanese "TORII" gate or the famous "MOUNT FUJI".
There are a few elements that I took from the billboards , which is 1st the Jurassic poster , the idea was having a mountain since there is a volcano as a background for that billboard, 2nd the red ball in the billboard next to the jurassic poster as a red sun for the poster, 3rd I took the structure as a repetition of the lights on the billboard structure, 4th the billboard next to the billboard structure, the thing I saw n got from it is direction from the black lines from the bottom of the billboard till the top of the billboard, 5th was the milo billboard as I took the green looking wave as for my water wave in my art work and the 6th is the BMW billboard I took the rims shape as for my circles in my artwork and for the principles that I found and stated in the beginning which is movement , repetition , emphasis , direction , gradient , figure ground and contrast.
1.4 1st attempt of sketches
After doing the 1st sketch which is on the left, I felt the composition wise is bit heavy on the bottom and the top of the piece of sketch is a little too empty. So I did another sketch which is on the right side of the image where I replace the Japanese gate to a mountain and I try to make the composition a little bit more balance, I thought its was ok for this piece where I am ready to transfer it to illustrator , I send the image to a few friend to ask for some comments some said it was nice and some said it was to heavy and everything is concentrated in the middle of the paper where its a little boring " their point of view ". After getting back some of the feedbacks I decided the I will stick to the idea of the Mount Fuji instead of the Japanese gate, so from there I refine the composition and make it visually pleasing and to make the composition balance.

I was satisfied with the final outcome of my idea , from there I transferred my idea to illustrator.

after I put in the sun shine , I notice that the sun shine is not contrasting with the background so I decided to change colour and add in my birds.

after adding the bird and the gold and yellow gradient background its better because its has a very strong contrast compared to image 1.7 but although the background is very contrast but is trying to override the art work. I decided to do not so strong gradient but still keeping the sunshine colour.

This gradient looks more eye pleasing compared image 1.9. After this art work is done, I showed Ms sherry. I told all the examples, element, and principles that I found and I applied it to my art work than Ms sherry said that after I told her all the elements I took from the billboard than she said she finally understand after that the composition is good and the contrast is balance is not over taking the main details of the art work but the gradient can be stronger a little and but there is too many birds, the only thing that I was instructed is to lessen the birds n make it smaller. Ms jinchi is not in class so I cant get her feedback. So after getting the feedback from ms sherry so I when I went homed and lessen the birds.
2.1 Final art work
The final artwork is done I showed ms sherry the next class , she said its almost there but there is something missing but ms sherry cant tell, so in my mind I all have a thought to do a layering and laser cut for this project and break the box , ms sherry said sounds good. So after ms sherry, I went to ms jinchi for feedback , so I told all the principles that I found in the billboard , the element I found in the element and showed all my examples of billboard. I also told ms jinchi that I want to do the laser cutting to get more of the layering feel for the poster. ms jinchi agreed and ask me to proceed with my idea. So after getting the approval from the two lecturer so from there I have create a smother file and went to the laser cutting company the next day.

2.3 Process of laser cut
after the laser cutting of getting the shape on the acrylic, we have to put it no another machines to do the UV print on the acrylic to get my art work printed on the acrylic.
2.4 Process of UV print
After all the laser cutting and UV printing the final out come is all the different layers that I separated and for now I have to ensemble it all together by using the thick acrylic double sided tape, why I used the thick acrylic tape is to give it a thicker space in-between each piece of acyclic because I am trying to give it a more obvious depth.
During the UV printing process my mountain from my laptop screen is grey but after is printed out it came out to be green. I wanted to reprint the mountain piece but its too costly so decided to keep it as it is green colour

Ms Sherry : It was all nice already although is printed on the paper, but by doing the laser cutting and is a correct idea to do the laser cutting because it really does bring out the whole piece of art, and the printed acrylic's background colour is way more nicer and striking compared to the printed piece.
Ms Jinchi : I see what are u trying to do and to convey the principles from the billboard to your art work after explaining to me, than I told ms jinchi that I want to do laser cutting for each layer and ms jinchi say its a good idea and it will look good too. After the laser cutting is done I showed ms jinchi , she said it does really looks nicer compared to the printed paper.
Coursemate : Most of my friends said that this is one of the best art work I did throughout the whole semester. Its very eye catching as a artwork , if I am selling it , some of the friends will buy it.
Reflection on my self for this project
I was very lost at 1st for this project because it was my 1st time for not having a direction or a specific brief to follow on, this way of doing a project was very very new to me infected its was my 1st time for such a final project where it contains most of the marks of the 100%, so I was very scared at 1st I keep on asking ms sherry, ms jinchi and friends and I still didn't understand anything, I cant be leaving this aside on the next class I ask and ask both of the lecturer. After the both lecturer explain to me a few times I finally understood what is this project all about, we are supposed to find billboard's and get inspiration from it and we have to come out with a any kind of composition we want and by using any media we want, so from there I came out with the art work above. After its done I felt that it was not enough for a final project I won't break that box to try to get a better grade for my final project so I thought of doing a laser cutting, during the next class I asked my lecturers and they agreed so yeah I did the laser cutting the day after I got the approval from my lecturer . It turn out to be out of my expectations and I was very happy with the outcome. Lucky enough everyone felt the same as me that my final outcome with the layering is nicer than a printed piece of paper with my art work on. the only thing I felt hard was not being clear on my brief, after I am clear I was very sure on what I am doing. Yeah I am kind of sad that this class has came to an end because this subject was one of my favourite class so far.
