LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 9
22/5/2018 (week9)
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul both gave us a short lecture about the overall module reminding us that each assignment does matter requires the best effort from each one of us even though its stressful and time consuming. We also took the time to recap about our previous discussions and lectures
Lecture 10
Public holiday ( Vesak day )
Mr Shamsul went ahead to give a lecture based on print and screens. Prints, it tends to experience with typography today but it changes based on how the pages are rendered. Font size on paper would affect our reading as the appearance is much smaller in term of point size. Good typefaces for print consists of Caston, Garamond and Baskerville, which are normally common. As for screen types, it often enhances readability and performance in terms of being on screen rather than being on paper in a variety of digital environments. On screen, letterforms would be wider, spacings would be opened, the x-height of words would appear taller and that the ascenders and decenders would be reduced. Proportions would differ when we're using either a PC, tablets and phones as different sized pixels are used and it is normally considered as inches.

Font Design (week 9 - week 11)
22/5/2018 (week 9)
In today's class, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul both gave a brief on our 2nd project, that is based on font design. We were told to sketch out idea of the word " TAYLOR'S ", based on the 10 type face that were given to us
2.1 Type family
2.2 Idea sketches
Based on the last idea sketch of my font type , I feel the Taylor's this name best suits it , from our sketch , we went and start the actual project by using adobe illustration to develop our final font design and based on the font " BODONI".
2.3 Original Type face "BODONI"
Using the typeface, Bodoni , I developed my design on top using pen tool and rectangle tool.
2.4 1st attempt
2.5 1st attempt of the full screenshot of the screen
Mr Shamsul was happy with my 1st attempt and he said that my lines at the sides of my font
is too thin it can't be visible from far but the attempt of the font design is ok.
2.6 2nd attempt
2.7 2nd attempt of the full screenshot of the screen
Mr Vinod said that is a total contrast in the thickness of line I use and I also a total contrast on the Taylor logo but is not a bad thing , it may be applicable to the logo said mr Vinod , the way I constructed the T , A , Y , L , O and S is relatively good but I have a problem with my R and the apostrophe , the problem of the R is to thick as a whole it draws the attention to it 1st than only u will look at other alphabet so I was instructed to reconstruct the R and the problem with the apostrophe is too small that all.
2.8 3rd attempt Final
2.9 3rd attempt final progress
2.10 Final
After getting the feedback from Mr Vinod I reconstructed the R and resizing the apostrophe and I tried making each alphabet look related by making the overall design and lines look the same so it has the consistency in all alphabet. I notice that if one of the alphabet looks different it would make the visual appearance of the design to look off.

The Complete Typographer by Will Hill
For the first 400 years, the evolution of type design was dominated by the history of prince. Most major development in typography we are prompted by development in print technology, from the mechanisation of punch cutting and the invention of the Linotype and monotype system in the 19th century to the introduction of the phototypesetting in the 20th century.
The development of typographic design as a distinct profession in the 20th century phenomenon that itself reflect significant change in reprographic technology. The arrival of computerise typography revolutionise type design, bringing digital software to the independent user and providing the type designer with the mean to design, market, and distributer typographic product. At the same time the requirement of the internet have created a major new era of typographic practice. Where digital design initially focus on making screen information resemble the final printed output, typographic designers are developing design method and new typeface specifically for the screen.
Specific feedback : Mr Vinod commented on my front cover of the babadook story book is a little not in the middle, my page 2-5 is well expressed but page 6-7 is as expected Mr Vinod say I should express to the maximum because after the page 2-5 he wants a unexpected feeling or expression on the page 6-7 than my story book will be much more interesting and unexpected 8-16 is also well expressed
General feedback : Mr Vinod gave as a reflection on our exercise 1 , 2 , 3 and project 1 , and the main point that he is trying to convey is we must stand out among the group if not we will be dead, examples like we need to ask what ever we don't understand because by keeping silent will never bring us far.
Week 10
Public holiday ( Vesak day )
Week 11
Specific feedback : My font design was ok but is totally a challenges comparing the logo of Taylor but sometimes it works when u design a total opposite design of the taylor logo, the only problem I had is the capital R it does not look pleasant and the thickness is very thick.
General feedback : We should brave and feel free to asked anything when Mr. Vinod and Mr. Samsul doing lecturer. For Project 2, Mr. Vinod said that its quite hard to create letter " R and S" so have to keep all the width and height keep consistent.
REFLECTION
Experience
Week 9
I experienced that to achieve a decent font design, typeface is a family, to be related to each other , thats why its important for us to apply that to our own font design , it does particularly make a difference to my font design.
Week 10
Public holiday
Week 11
We have to get approval from mr Vinod for our font design than we need to transfer it to font lab , there is where we have to unite it in ai than we copy the letter than we paste it in font lab , it wasn't that hard after all.
Week 9
I observed that the 1st few font design that I sketch it does not really applicable to the 'Taylor's" the word and I feel the last was suitable for the word that we was given, I though the sides lines must be thin enough to convey my design but Mr Shamsul commented he said that I must make the side lines must be thinker so from far is visible.
Week 10
Public holiday
Week 11
Week 11
I observed that a lotof people is having the same problem that Ihave too where is the capital R , for not having consistent thickness so most of us we have to redo our R to make it looks consistent as a whole.
Week 9
I found that the Taylors symbol seemed as if the type face would suit a settled look. the difficulties that I found is not easy to find or design a font design when we have a limit of type family for us to choose.
Week 10
Public holiday
Week 11
Week 11
I found that is really hard to have a consistent thickness in the letter because of the angle that the R have is not easy to follow it, I have to redo, redraw and remeasure many times and is still not perfect yet.
